JUNE 2021

They have exciting news, continue reading below…………………..

It’s here! Okay, what is it?…THE GRAND ANNOUNCEMENT…Aerospace teacher Mr Jon Collins from Atherton SHS, has kindly donated a complete Zenith Zodiac 601HD kit aircraft to Mueller Aviation. This aircraft was donated to Atherton SHS from a gentleman named Don Burnell from Cairns in May 2020. Sadly, Don passed away and the Atherton crew were bequeathed the largely unfinished kit. Unfortunately, due to other projects that had higher priority, they were unable to start on the Zodiac, hence teacher Jon’s gracious gift to Mueller College. Opening the boxes was simply amazing. On top of millions of bits of Zodiac, there was a plethora of brand-new tools and even some instruments. There is office equipment and a brand new vacuum cleaner (maybe its a ducted-fan powered aircraft…). We unpacked wheels (its a tail-dragger!), Garmin avionics, lot of metal, and a radiator. So good. I am humbled by Jon and Don Burnell’s generosity. Special thanks also to SAAA chapter 34 who provided the tools and instruments. The great adventure has begun…

Zenith Zodiac CH601 HD Build Log #1. First look at the kit by the mentors…we think they are happy with it. First task as always – an inventory of parts. The students were split into teams to undertake this task; wings, fuselage, tail, control to name a few. A lot was achieved and most parts accounted for to date. Still more inventory to be done next week as well as organisation and storage of parts. Big plug to TA Melissa who is organising the paperwork, re-typing the inventory into a searchable Excel spreadsheet, and generally bringing sanity to a very busy work environment. Oh, thanks once again to the mentors for taking the students through this, and to the generous sponsor of the kit – Mr Jon Collins from Atherton SHS and the late Mr Don Burnell.

It is great to see our mentors from the RV12 build continuing to support the new project – true SAAA spirit!

DECEMBER 2020

Mueller College will be posting updates on the build on the Mueller Aviation facebook page facebook.com/muellerAviation/ Airsport Mueller Connect #SAAAPlaneBuild The Mueller Mustang team finished deburing the top wing skins (W-1203B,W-1201B and W-1202B) and then prepared them for priming after which they were then primed. After that, the tie down hole on the outboard top wing skin W-1203B was enlarged. The students then clecoed the top wing skins to wing skeleton and also clecoed the wing walk doubler on to W-1201 and W-1201B wing skins. Finally, the team riveted all top wing skins and wing walk doubler after removing the clecos in order. The other Mueller Mustang team finished preparing Flaperon A-1201A,B and C leading edge skins, primed the skins and clecoed them to the flaperon skeleton, then riveted all leading edge flaperon skins. Flaperon competed, happy days 🎉😊! This is the last week of students at school however most of the Mustangs are coming in during the holidays to complete the wing – next Wednesday will be the wing tip. A couple of weeks more will see everything completed. Mueller have had an article published in their local community newspaper.

SEPTEMBER 2020

Update received from Anthony Banks (Teacher) and John Keen (Mentor)

Over the past month the students were introduced to the concept of the SAAA Youth Build and the expected trajectory of the project.  They have been Introduced to tools and 2024-T3 aluminium characteristics and commenced the building of toolbox practice kits.  Students have continued on with toolbox practice kits, learning deburring, match drilling, use of clamps and clecos.  They have also learnt marking out, drilling and cutting of hinges, solid riveting and pop riveting.  With the wing arriving, they have now carried out inventory and preparation of wing ribs and spar components.

AUGUST 2020

Exciting news! Our VANS RV12 plane wing has arrived! The students helped carry the boxes containing the various components from the back of the ute and into the Aerospace workshop this afternoon. The room was buzzing with excitement as the boxes were opened and they were able to see the contents for the first time. The students then continued working on their VANS toolboxes, learning how to use cleco pliers, dimpling dies and deburring tools. The feedback from the students has been very positive with some saying that the plane build project is now the highlight of their week.

A big thank you to Chapter 22 for their kind donation

JULY 2020

The SAAA aircraft build project has begun! Our 15 enthusiastic young builders met their SAAA mentors and commenced constructing their VANS toolboxes that were shipped all the way from VANS in America. This will give the students valuable construction experience and allow them to hone their skills before they start work on the wing. The wing is currently on its way up to us from Melbourne. #SAAAPlaneBuild
